A GLOBAL CLOUD SERVICES PROVIDER
A global cloud services provider was building its own business intelligence platform, Amazon QuickSight. However, its internal enterprise reporting still ran on Oracle OBIEE, a platform the organization now had both a technical and strategic reason to move off.
Rather than continue maintaining an Oracle estate, the organization chose to run its own reporting on its own platform. That made this more than a migration: as reports moved across, the DataTerrain team worked directly alongside the QuickSight product team, and what surfaced during migration fed back into enhancements to the QuickSight interface.
OBIEE and QuickSight are built on different foundations. The hardest part of any OBIEE migration is not the reports but the metadata model underneath them. The key challenges:
OBIEE's three-layer repository (physical, business model and mapping, and presentation) has no QuickSight counterpart. That governed, centralized metadata model has to be rebuilt as QuickSight datasets and calculated fields, which is where most of the engineering effort sits.
unlike a migration to a mature target, QuickSight was actively evolving during the engagement, so gaps found during conversion became product feedback rather than dead ends.
OBIEE analyses, prompts, and filters have no import path into QuickSight, so each had to be re-expressed using QuickSight datasets, calculated fields, parameters, and controls.
DataTerrain converted the reporting estate to QuickSight while working side by side with the platform's product team, benefiting both the migration and the product.
DataTerrain rebuilt approximately 100 reports on QuickSight, re-expressing analyses, prompts, and filters with the platform's native dataset and calculated-field model.
DataTerrain rebuilt the logic previously held in the OBIEE repository as QuickSight datasets and calculated fields so reporting stayed consistent across the estate.
DataTerrain worked closely with the QuickSight team throughout. The team raised gaps and friction points identified during the migration directly and contributed to enhancements to the QuickSight interface.
Reports execute 40% faster on QuickSight than they did on the previous OBIEE system.
Moved enterprise reporting off Oracle and onto the platform the organization itself builds and operates, removing the cost and overhead of maintaining a separate Oracle BI estate.
Issues surfaced during conversion fed directly to the QuickSight product team and contributed to interface enhancements, value that extended beyond this engagement.
Migrating to a still-maturing BI platform takes more than conversion skill. It calls for a team that can identify what the platform cannot yet do and work with its builders rather than around them. DataTerrain rebuilt the reporting estate on QuickSight while working directly with the QuickSight product team, turning migration findings into product enhancements. The organization moved its reporting to its own platform, and the platform came out better.
