Informatica PowerCenter is a widely used Extraction, Transformation and Loading (ETL) tool used in building enterprise data warehouses. It provides a robust infrastructure for developing, managing, and maintaining data warehouses. A key component of this infrastructure is the repository, which stores metadata for all the objects used in PowerCenter.

Discover the complexities of developing global and local repositories in Informatica with DataTerrain. Our experts can gain valuable insights from past projects to optimize your repository development.

Repositories are classified into two types: Global and Local.

Global Repository in Informatica:

A Global Repository is a centralized repository in a domain. It allows sharing of objects across the repositories in a domain. The objects are created once and used in multiple mappings across the domain.

Steps to create a Global Repository:

  • Launch the Informatica PowerCenter Repository Manager.
  • Go to the “Repository” menu and select “Create”.
  • In the “Create Repository” dialog box, provide the necessary details such as Repository Name, Database Type, Connection String, Username, and Password.
  • Select the “Global” option and click on “OK”.

Local Repository in Informatica:

A Local Repository is a standalone repository which doesn’t share any connections or objects with other repositories.

Steps to create a Local Repository:

  • Launch the Informatica PowerCenter Repository Manager.
  • Go to the “Repository” menu and select “Create”.
  • In the “Create Repository” dialog box, provide the necessary details such as Repository Name, Database Type, Connection String, Username, and Password.
  • Select the “Local” option and click on “OK”.

Linking Local and Global Repositories in Informatica

To leverage shared objects, link your local repository to the global repository:

  • In the Repository Manager, right-click on the local repository and select 'Link to Global Repository'.
  • Select the global repository from the list and click OK.
